Treasure Hunter Who Struck Gold.

Sunday 25 May 2014.

There's an excellent article that has appeared in the Daily Telegraph today about David Spohr, the chap who unearthed the 3,500 year old gold lunula,  which is a chest ornament worn by a Bronze Aged Chieftain. Its a great read and written in a way we detectorists can relate to. It also I think shows detectorists in a good light and the good that we do for our heritage,  so a story that needs to be shown all over to let people know what responsible metal detectorists can achieve, and do achieve. Have a read of the article yourself and you will see what I mean, this is what metal detecting for the majority of detectorists is all about. Here's the link:  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/

  1. There was a farmer in Cornwall picked one up in his field and used it on a broken gate as a hinge was spotted by someone and told the farmer it is now in Truro museum.

  4. True Dick, one just never knows. Not so long ago I saw a picture of a lead Palm Guard, if you've never heard of it, its a lump of lead fashioned to fit in the palm of your hand for forcing large needles for repairing sacks and things. On these palm guards you can see the needle mark indents left in the soft lead. I looked at it and thought I'm sure I have something like that in my scrap lead bucket. Went out to check and sure enough I had found one thinking it was just a lump of lead with no use. Was chuffed I had one.

  5. I went through a few boxes a while back and found a couple of gold rings (small ones) that I had thrown in with all the costume jewelry. Must have been sleeping at the time or had too much to drink....probably the latter. I still have a few more boxes buried in the garage that I need to go through however finding them is another story. Have a great day...

  6. Well Dick, when you do get around to sorting your trash boxes it will feel like a day out detecting as you come across stuff you never thought you had.

  7. Merely finding the boxes in my garage would be a successful hunt.
