Silver Coin From Down On The Farm.

Silver George V Half Crown dated 1923.
Toy horse drawn bus.
At last I have something decent to put up on my blog. Yesterday my Nephew and I went to his permission for the day as a planned club dig we intended to go on was cancelled. We have been to this old farm many a time and the last few times pickings have been very slow. Its always somewhere to go when nowhere else is available. The farm is very old with about a dozen fields we can go in, all pasture with a wooded area.

Tiny crotal bell charm.
As normal the hunt started off very slow with only trash and the odd grot coin coming up. After a couple of hours we found ourselves up beside the wooded area and decided to give the woods another go even though we have found nothing of interest in there before. The last time we were in these woods was way back in the spring and back then I never realized that there are chestnut trees there. Now its autumn you could see the prickly chestnut casings laying all around, I even ate a few while I was there. Now I thought over the years, if there was any human activity in these woods it would be here. I imagined a few generations of people chestnut picking so began scanning around these chestnut trees. It felt like I was walking on a soft carpet what with all the decomposed leaves that have fallen from these trees over the years. Just as I was starting to think anything would be well buried and out of reach I had a lovely signal on my Deus, a reading of 71. An easy dig and up popped a lovely large George V silver half crown, dated 1923. As you can see in the pic above it cleaned up nicely.

Although its hard to see, the smaller coin to the left of the silver half crown is I think a fake George III shilling. A better pic of it below where you can see the outer silver surface peeling off.  Also in my total finds pic are a couple of buckles, toy horse drawn bus, five grot coins, a stem from a razor, four buttons, and a tiny charm crotal bell, most probberly of a charm bracelet.
My total finds for the day.
Fake George III shilling.

  2. Nice find, and not sure how things are over there but when I am not finding much on a farm I ask the farmer if he has a daughter.....(just kidding, just kidding)

    1. HaHa Dick, over here and I expect over there the farmer would chase you off his land with a shotgun asking a question like that.

  3. Hi Janner:

That Half-Crown is a nice find. I checked on an inflation counter and in 1923 it had the buying power of £6.20 in today's money.
