Bit of Midday Sport.

 Tuesday 15 April 2014
Today on the beach at Slapton Sands I had a midday detecting session lasting about four hours. My idea was to catch the low water and detect up alongside this low water mark. After about an hour I gave up as nothing was coming up there and moved up on the high tide mark. This was a lot better and I was finding coins.

There's a few decimal coins there in the pic, also some pre-decimal of a florin, a shilling, 3 sixpences, 3 thruppenny bits and 3 pennies, all badly worn. The settings I was mostly using were the Deus Fast program with full tones, zero discrimination and full sensitivity on tracking. A little bit noisy, but the signals came through loud and clear and was easy to tell the iron.
Nothing special came up again, but it was all good sport. I must be due for a decent find soon, maybe next time.

  1. Nice little session there. If you're finding lots of coins then rings hopefully not far away.

Janner! Janner! I did it! I did it! I went and got my first permission....from a real farmer (!) Can you believe it?! Lol. The farm's about 8 miles from my home. The farmer was really nice. I think I was very lucky indeed. I'm still in shock. The only two conditions were that I stay off the growing crops and I wait until the new-born lambs get a bit bigger! No problem!

Sorry for spamming your poor blog with this but I just had to tell someone! I'm so happy.

    Cheers

  4. Great to hear Martyn and congrats on your permission. How did it all come about, were you recommended by someone or did you just cold call, would love to hear the details.

  5. I lad who I went to school with made the newspapers a couple of years ago after he found a hoard. So I arranged to meet him for a drink through the week. I was hoping to pick up a few tips or at least have a nice chat about detecting. Anyway, he was genuinely dumbfounded to learn that I didn't have a single farm permission. He was shocked. He told me that he knew a local farmer because his kids go to school with the farmer's kids. He said that the first time he detected on that farm, he dug up 8 hammereed coins along one of the farm footpaths, less than 100 yards long. Well, that got my attention (!). Next thing I knew, my mate put down his pint of shandy and drove me to the farm, told me to get out and ask the farmer! So I did. That's how it happened.

The farm is enormous, so it should keep me and my mate going for a good while.

So if you can ever make it up here to the north-east for a nice holiday or something, you're always welcome to join me mate.

  7. I think the gods must be smiling on that mate of mine. He only got into metal detecting after finding a fully-working Minelab Sovereign for £35 at a car boot sale! His first day out on a farm he found 8 hammered coins. Not long after that, he found a hoard. He's now a qualified archaeologist and is a uk authority on certain types of artifacts. How about that for living the dream!? Lol. It just goes to show, you're never too old to try something new.

  8. Now there's a success story if ever I heard one, well done to your mate Martyn. I'm often at car boot sales with my missus, (she loves them), and always keep my eyes open for detecting gear, all I've spotted so far are those cheap machines costing around £30 - £50 brand new. In fact I'm thinking of doing a boot sale soon to raise funds for my next purchase of a long handled beach scoop.
