Another Practice Run.

While out detecting last weekend I wasn't very confident I was setting the ground balance right on my Deus. Even re-reading the instruction book didn't do any good. So what does one do in this situation, post one's questions on a metal detecting forum and pick experienced users brains. I wasn't disappointed. Had a few replies and learnt a lot.

So this morning I popped over to my usual haunt which I now call my practice ground and gave my new found knowledge a run. Boy what a difference, really its so easy when you know what your doing, everything fell into place and I felt more confident. Companies ought to get forum members to write their instruction books, a lot better and easier to understand.

After about 3 hours of really just learning and playing around with different settings I did manage to find four coins, a pound coin, a 1p, an old halfpenny and a sixpence, and a few of the usual bullet casings. What was good is that this was stuff I had missed before, and I've been over and over this ground, so a result for me.
I'll master this Deus yet.

  1. Ha! Now there's a man well on his way to mastering his machine! Nice work mate. And, right, the online forums are great for seeking the advice of experienced users about those inevitable things that still don't quite make sense.

I was reading older posts about your experiences with the Velox 1 yesterday - thanks for that. And well done winning a $500 prize by the way - nice work if you can get it! I was wondering if the Velox 1 might be a particularly good deal as Nokta are the new kids on the block and may therefore be offering good mid-range machines at slightly better prices than the more well-known manufacturers.

Do you mind if I ask you how the Velox 1 compares to the Deus? Bearing in mind that you haven't had the Deus that long, but is there a massive difference?

Cheers mate and keep up the good work.

    1. Cheers Martyn, I'll crack this Deus hopefully before it cracks me :)
I did enjoy the Velox One but needed a very light machine, am not saying the Velox is heavy, just that with my arms I needed the lightest machine out there, hence why I now have a Deus. How did it compare performance wise, well, with my limited experience so far with the Deus, performance wise I have not seen any difference between the two. The Deus has a fast recovery speed, so did the Velox, no difference there. Depth wise I have not seen any difference, their both deep. Setting up and ground balancing I would say the Velox wins that one. I do find the Deus quieter when detecting on full sensitivity, the Velox did not like very wet grass at all.

So really in a nutshell, for my few hundred quid more I have a very light machine, quieter, and of course its cordless. I'm enjoying the Deus mainly because of those three things at the moment.

  2. Thanks for the answer mate. The Velox 1 sounds promising then - at least performance-wise anyway. That's good to know. But your points about the weight etc are noted. The Deus certainly looks very sleek and mean compared to the Velox. The poor Velox looks as if someone has screwed a box of Kleenex Tissues behind the arm rest! Ha! Still, as long as it finds good targets, that's the main thing.

Keep us posted re your progress with the Deus and, as long as you don't mind posting pics, I'm always very interested to see any military stuff you might be lucky enough to find.

    Cheers

    1. No probs matey, and I love posting pics. Every time I find something I think to myself something for the photo. What I really need is some new land. The places I go to are the places I've been time and time again and their only small. As you can see from recent trips, its the same 'ol stuff comming up. Still, something will turn up and at the mo its somewhere to go.

  3. I know what you mean mate. All I can say is...where there's a will there's a way (!) Something will come up sooner or later so don't lose heart.

Me and my mate have been ruthlessly exploiting all friends, family and colleagues - past and present! - who might know farmers/landowners and be able to perhaps help us get a permission, but no luck so far. We shall persevere.

To be honest, and this is just what I've experienced, I was shocked at the number of farmers who refused us permission because of bad experiences with detectorists in the past. Like, for example, the last farmer told me he once allowed one person to detect on his land, and only in certain areas, and then nine turned up and marched all over the place. He said that even after walking over and telling them not to go in certain places, they went straight back there when they thought his back was turned. He ended up ordering them off his land. It's sad to keep hearing such stories

    1. Some people really have a cheek don't they. Yes, its a sad fact that we all get tarnished with the same brush.
